Support for Carers
Did you know that most carers don’t realise they would be classed as a ‘carer’?
It can take on average 2 years for someone to realise they are a carer. Suspected Dementia, children with behavioural challenges or health problems, or recuperating after an operation are all situations where you might have become someone’s de facto carer without a conscious decision being made – there are an estimated 13.6 million unpaid carers in the UK supporting disabled, seriously ill or older friends or relatives.
If your partner, a family member or friend is relying on you, please don’t wait until you reach a crisis point to find out what support is out there to help you help them.
- You don’t need to have been caring for a long time….
- Your caring responsibilities don’t need to be permanent …..
- You don’t need to have told anyone else that you are a carer….
- You don’t need to have had a formal diagnosis to be caring for someone ….
- You don’t need to be receiving a carer’s allowance to be considered a carer …..
- You don’t need to be caring full-time – carers are often holding down a job, studying, or have other family commitments

Northants Carers are the organisation that can help, with immediate needs, longer term support, planning what to do in an emergency, etc. You may feel you need training to be able to provide safe care, or would like someone to come and see you in your role to understand fully what help might be available – that is called a Carer’s Assessment – NB that is not to assess whether you are caring properly, but to assess what support is most appropriate for you !
Read more on their website – www.northamptonshire-carers.org Look at “Support we provide”
They are available to chat on their support line :
01933 677907, Option 2
Lines are open Monday – Friday, 9am – 12noon; 1-4pm
Or you can refer yourself : – www.northamptonshire-carers.org Look for “Complete Self-Assessment”
